Scout Back
to Basics Camp 2008
In May we held the back to basics camp
at Squirrel wood, the idea of the camp is to teach younger scouts basic camp
and backwoods skills. These skills were taught on a base system, camp hygiene,
axe and saw, fire lighting, pitch a tent and food wise, twists, making a stew
and backwoods desserts.
25 Scouts from the 12th, 25th, 1/36th and 47th
took part. It was interesting to see what scouts from different troops already
knew and how they took on board the training and used it on camp. All the
participants seemed to enjoy the camp and most of them including some of the
leaders came away with a little more knowledge and another camp under their
belt.
Well done to all the Scouts that took part, next step is the
advanced camp skills weekend later in the year. Once again a big thank you to
all the leaders and helpers who gave their time over the weekend, without whom
none of the activities within scouting would happen or be the success they
usually are. Dirk Gilbert ADC Scouts |
Scout 7 'a'
Side Football Competition
It was a wet and windy 'summer'
morning when 10 teams from troops across the Danum district met at Balby Carr
School to take part in the 2008 7 a side football competition. After a little
bit of a scare when no referees turned up, a little bit of running around and
with some persuasion 4 parents and leaders took up the challenge, and under the
circumstances and at such short notice, they did a great job. This little
problem sorted the games started and the rain luckily seemed to ease off, for a
while anyway.
Balby Carr had worked together with Helen Nichols to
formulate a league system to make sure that all teams played an equal amount of
games and then went forward to a semi final and then onto an exiting final. The
teams that took part were from the 1st/36th, 9th, 12th, 16th, 23rd, 25th, 28th,
47th, 55th, 61st, 67th& 68th, and a couple of Scouts from troops that did
not have a full team joined other teams that were a player short. This made for
some interesting comments from these Scouts as to how they had saved the day
and without them their teams could not have won.
With the games
underway it became apparent that some spectators were getting a little more
exited than the players, this showed in the loud cheers of "GOOD BALL" and "GET
IN THERE" to name but a few, It was good to see so much support for the Scouts
from parents and friends. This did seem to spur the Scouts on and made for some
exiting and in some cases nail biting games, especially when the final score
was only decided in the closing minutes or by a penalty shoot out.
After the league games had been played we had the semi finals with the
9th, 12th, 61st & 67th and the Final was then between Bawtry and Bentley.
Once again this was an exiting match with the 61st Bentley walking away with
the title for the second year running. Congratulations to them but also to all
the troops that took part to make this a great success and a big Thank you to
Julie and Helen without whom the competition would not have taken part and run
so smoothly, also a big thank you to the staff at Balby Carr who helped
throughout the competition. Dirk Gilbert ADC Scouts |
