Badge History |
Doncaster Danum Scout District, its name
being taken from the Roman name for the town of Doncaster, came into being on
1st February 2004 when the four Districts of Doncaster North, South, East and
West were merged to form a new larger Scout District to cover the Metropolitan
area of Doncaster. The old Districts had been in existence since 1974.
The D.C. elect of the new District Bernard Gray wanted to ensure that a
new badge was ready to be issued to members of the Doncaster groups at the
District launch which was held at The Dome Leisure Centre, Doncaster on 31st
January 2004. As time was short he decided against holding a competition for
the design, which has happened in many cases, and instead asked Matthew
Beresford from Maltby to design the new badge.
The old Districts of
Doncaster had badges which were based on the pre 1974 Doncaster badge,
depicting many of the industries and landmarks within the Borough. In the years
since 1974 many of these industries have been run down or have disappeared from
the area, so a new badge design was thought to be appropriate which could then
be incorporated into a double badge with the South Yorkshire County
badge. This was the first double badge to be issued in the County.
Matthews design shows a gold Roman helmet to link the town with its
Roman heritage and the name of the new District with a Yorkshire rose to the
bottom left showing the geographical location, all on a black background. The
whole badge is bound in red to match the South Yorkshire County badge. |
